  • Extent and Access:
    2 folders

  • Language: English
  • Contents and Scope:
Autograph drafts and research notes written in a notebook and on inserted pages some of which were taped or pasted into the notebook (where it is clear that these insertions are linked to the text in the notebook they have been retained in the correct place). Material in the notebook and particularly at the beginning appears to date from early in Hughes's life and career, perhaps even in his childhood. The material includes folk tales, stories about ghosts, biblical stories, research notes about historical figures and other subjects including Buddhism and China and short prose passages written by Hughes. The reverse of the notebook includes notes about Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler . Inserted papers also include further research notes on different subjects and some prose passages. Some papers appear to be from the late 1950s as they are written on paper with a 'Smith College Memorandum' header, whilst another section of papers titled 'Britain's Little Errors' dates from 1993. A reservation slip (presumably for a library) dated 28th and 30th January 1953, 'E.J. Hughes' is included among the inserted papers. Loose inserted pages (which are not explicitly linked to the text of the notebook) have been removed from the notebook and placed in a separate folder with other loose pages originally in a folder with the notebook. This folder includes some undated material.
