HENRY HOWARD, EARL OF NORTHAMPTON: 'An answere To the coppie of a rayling Invective against the regiment of woemen in generall . . . written unto Queene Elizabeth . . .'; copy,circa 1620-1640. This tract, a reply to John Knox's The first blast of the trumpet against the monstrous regiment of women (1558), was commissioned about 1576 by Burghley and completed in 1589. It incorporates a relation of Howard's personal misfortunes and an asseveration of his loyalty to Queen Elizabeth I. Further copies of a similar date are now Add. 12513 and Harley 7021, ff. 65-122. At the head of the original title-page (f. 1) occurs the number '32', along with the initials 'G.D.'. Some pencilled notes and markings in a modern hand appear on ff. 3, 5v, 12v, 14 and 19v. Purchased at Sotheby's, 27 Jan. 1987, lot 795.
Paper; ff. iii+52. 295 x 195mm. Watermark of same general type as Heawood no. 4055. Modern binding by J. H. and E. Ellis of Ripon, with marbled boards, vellum spine with lettering and calligraphic title-page (f. i).
