SIR HENRY ELLIS: letters, etc., to J. B. Nichols and J. G. Nichols from Sir Henry Ellis, Principal Librarian of the British Museum; 1806-1846, n.d. They are mostly (ff. 4-134 passim) addressed to John Bowyer Nichols, 25 Nov. 1819-29 May 1846, and (ff. 66-131 passim) to his son John Gough Nichols, 14 March 1831-12 April 1843, with several (ff. 135-153) undated. They were written almost entirely in Ellis's capacity as Secretary (1814) of the Society of Antiquaries and deal with editorial matters relating to its journal Archaeologia, of which the Nichols family were the printers. Supplementing Add. 36987, ff. 42-66. Also included are letters to the antiquaries Richard Gough (f. 1), 20 June 1806, and Samuel Lysons the elder (f. 3), 13 March 1819. For further papers of Ellis see Add. 41312-41319, 42506, 42137, 57521, 57522, 57557 and 57558. Purchased from William P. Werden of Palo Alto, California, 20 Jan. 1973.
