Genealogical roll chronicle of kings of England and Scotland and the dukes of Normandy
- Scope & Content:
-
Contents:
A genealogical chronicle with commentary in Latin of the kings of England from 'Aethelstan', described as the father of Aethelbert and Egbert, to Edward II (r. 1307-1327), with added continuations to the coronation of Henry VI (r. 1422-1461).
Face of the roll:
Membranes 1-4: A genealogical diagram of the kings of England from 'Aethelstan' to Edward II (r. 1307-1327). The lines in the diagram have been scratched out where there the royal line is interrupted, for example between Harthacnut and Edward the Confessor and between Stephen and Henry II. The commentary in Latin is imperfect at the beginning; the first paragraph is worn, beginning at 'Anno....Britonum...Cadwalladr' and ending 'Willelmus Bastard interfecit in bello...' . A poem praising Edward I is included to the right of his medallion in the diagram. The commentary ends with the Council of Vienna, 'ex toto ordinem templariorum quia ex toto Christum negaverunt'. There are two continuations:
Membrane 4: A first continuation, 4 lines long, describes the defeat and death of King Edward II in 1327 that was probably added shortly after this event;
Membranes 5-7: A second continuation to the reign of Henry VI (r. 1422-1461) written shortly after his coronation ceremony in 1429; the scribe of this continuation has written the dates of accession of Kings Egbert to Harold in the genealogical diagram, at the top of each section of commentary.
Dorse of the roll (dorse abbreviated as d):
Membrane 1d: A text on the kings of Scotland from Brutus to Robert the Bruce (r. 1306-1329);
Membrane 3d: A genealogical diagram of the Dukes of Normandy from Rollo to William the Bastard.
Decoration:
Diagram with roundels and lines in red, blue, green and brown. Crowns in brown, some with jewels in red and green. Initials in red or blue with pen-flourishing in the other colour, some with fleur-de-lys. Maniculae in the left margin.

Origin: England, N. (?Durham).
Provenance: Perhaps made for the bishop of Durham or his circle: the commentary contains references to St Cuthbert, to bishops of Durham, and to Anglo-Scottish relations, which are emphasised by maniculae pointing to the key passages (membrane 2, see Laborderie, Histoire (2013) p. 152). The original part was written after the battle of Stirling in June, 1314. The final additions were made shortly after 1429, the date of coronation of Henry VI (r. 1422-1471).
