- Title:
- Genealogical roll chronicle of the kings of England to Henry III
- Scope & Content:
-
Contents:
A genealogical chronicle with a commentary in Latin. This is one of the earliest surviving genealogical rolls of its kind, probably produced between 1265 and the death of Henry III in 1272, with a continuation added before 1307. The Latin commentary is related to John of Wallingford's chronicle, Cotton Julius MS D VII, ff. 49v-110r; the commentaries in the Anglo-Norman rolls of the 14th century were probably based on this version of the text (see Laborderie, 'Ligne de reis' (2013), p. 148).
Membrane 1 is blank.
Membrane 2: A diagram of the Heptarchy followed by a commentary, beginning, 'Per hanc figuram superius circulatam'; a poem from Henry of Huntingdon, Historia Anglorum, in Latin, also found in Harley Roll C 10, Additional MS 21368, and Lansdowne Roll 3.
Membranes 3-9: A genealogical diagram of the kings of England from Egbert (r. 802-839), written 'Athelbrict' to Henry III (r. 1216-1272), including his descendants; 5 lines added at the end of the commentary with a notice of Henry III's death and the coronation of Edward I, but the roundel for Henry III's successor is blank (membrane 9).
The dorse of the roll is blank (dorse abbreviated as d).
Decoration:
A framed Heptarchy diagram with roundels in colours and foliate decoration in blue, brown and white on a gold ground, including a hybrid creature and a rubric in gold (membrane 2). Medallions and lines in the genealogical diagram in brown, green or red. An initial in red with pen-flourishing in blue and an initial in blue with pen-flourishing in red (membrane 2). Paraphs in red or blue and highlighting in red.

Origin: England (?Norwich).
Provenance:
Copied after 1265, as the Battle of Evesham is included. The death of Henry III on 16th November, 1272, and his burial at Westminster is not recorded in the main commentary, so it was probably completed before this date (see Laborderie, 'The First Manuals' p. 4, n. 14), but a short continuation was added in the reign of Edward I (r. 1272-1307).
Raoul de Fretenham, cellarer of the Benedictine cathedral priory of the Holy Trinity, Norwich in 1273-1274, given by him to the priory: a pressmark and inscription recording the donation, 'C. xii. Radulfi de fretinham mo[nachi]' in a hand of the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century.
A. Godson, bought from him by the British Museum, 10 July, 1876.
