Copy of the first version of the pastoral romance ‘The Arcadia’, composed by Sir Philip Sidney, author and courtier (1554-1586), between c. 1577 and c. 1580, and first published in 1590. Known as the ‘Davies MS’.

f. ii recto: Title in the hand of Martin: ‘Sir Philip Sydneys Arcadia, A Romance &c In Prose, & Verse. Containing 190 Folios, fairly written, on paper’.
f. ii recto: Note of Charles Brietzcke (d. 1794), clerk in the Secretary of State’s Office and former owner: ‘I bought this Book out of the Collection of the Late Antiquary Mr Martin of Palsgrave Suffolk. Charles Brietzcke 18th May 1774’.
