Pierre Bersuire, Ovidius moralizatus
- Scope & Content:
-
Contents:
ff. 4r-93v: Ovidius moralizatus, a Latin moralisation of Ovid's Metamorphoses (imperfect owing to a number of lacunae and lost quires). In the rubric it is attributed to the English Dominican Thomas Waleys (fl. 1318-1349): 'Incipiunt moralitates ovidii methamorphosen etiam de formis figuris et ymaginibus deorum que variis modis videlicet literaliter moraliter hystorialiter necnon spiritualer exponuntur edite a magistro Thoma Waleys anglico sacre pagine doctore de ordine predicatorum' (f. 4r). The text begins 'A veritate quidem auditum avertent ad fabulas convertentur' (2 Timothy 4: 4) (f. 4r).
Ovidius moralizatus is also found in British Library manuscripts Additional 62132 A, Royal 15 C XVI and Harley 1847.
