A transcript, chiefly in Ayscough's autograph, of part (i.e. covering Add. MSS. 4101-5014) of his Catalogue of the Manuscripts preserved in the British Museum hitherto undescribed ... published in 1782, the contents being arranged in numerical order of the MSS. and not in subject order as in the published version. At f. 1 there is a list of donors of MSS. Presented by the author, 23 Feb. 1782. After its receipt in the Museum the volume was used as a working catalogue and the following additions were made:-
(1) Descriptions of Add. MSS. 4324-4326, 5018-5711, by Joseph Planta (Keeper of MSS. 1776, Principal Librarian 1799); circ. 1783-1796. ff. 122b-145b.
(2) Descriptions of Add. MSS. 5712-6026, by the Rev. Robert Nares (Assistant Keeper 1795; Keeper of MSS. 1799); circ. 1797-1807. ff. 145b-152.
(3) Descriptions of Add. MSS. 5015-5017, 6027-6028 by Francis Douce (Keeper of MSS. 1807); circ. 1807-1810. ff. 123, 152. There are numerous annotations by Sir Frederic Madden (Assistant Keeper 1828; Keeper of MSS. 1837), including a note on f. 122b:-'I began a new detailed Catalogue from this place in 1831' (cf. T. C. Skeat, The Catalogues of the Manuscript Collections, rev. edn. 1962, p. 5, item 7). Paper; ff. ii + 152. Folio. 1781-1812.
