Two bearded Vaisnava associates of Chaitanya - Advaita and Keshav Bharati - in a trance-like dance.
- Scope & Content:
-
A painting illustrating a religious subject.
Two bearded Vaisnava associates of Caitanya ~ Advaita and Kesav Bharati in a trance-like dance.
By a patua, Kalighat, c.1885.
Inscribed in Bengali characters on front: ‘Advatita Mahaprabhu’ (Advaita, Mahaprabhu); on mount in pencil: ‘Adayta Mahaprabhu;’ in ink: ‘Aditya Mahaprabhu.’
Water-colour; 285 by 250 mm.
Purchased 1970.
Note: Part of a set of forty-four pictures exhibited in January 1970 by Hartnoll & Eyre Ltd, 9 Duke St, St James’s, London, many of which, like the present picture, had plain blue backgrounds and blue borders. Similar in style to Add.Or.1888.
The painting appears to be mis-inscribed, since Caitanya (Mahaprabhu) is usually shown without a beard (see Add.Or.899, 912, 1907, etc., where Caitanya and his disciples are identified by name). Advaita, a Brahmin of Santipur, was an early and leading devotee of Caitanya; Kesav Bharati was the guru of Caitanya.
