Muhammad ‘Ali Khan, Nawab of the Carnatic 1750-1795, c.1774
The Nawab stands facing the spectator, with one hand grasping his girdle, and the other holding the hilt of a sheathed sword, the point of which rests upon a richly decorated carpet. The dress consists of a full white robe with a narrow border of green and gold. The background shows a column, part of an arch and a balustrade, beyond which trees are visible.
Inscribed on column: ‘Nabob Waulaujah ummeer ulhind omdat ul mulk ausuph uldowlah behauder Zupherjung sepah saulaur soubahdar of the Carnatick etc 1775.’

In February 1775 Muhammad ‘Ali sent two portraits of himself to England, one for the Company and the other, now on loan to the Victoria Memorial Hall, Calcutta, for George III. A third portrait was painted by Willison after his return to Madras from Bengal and this is now in the possession of the Government of India hanging in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. A fourth was exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1777. At least two more portraits of the Nawab were made, as well as others showing him with his second son and grandson.
