Presented by Dr. T.A. Wise, 1875
This portrait belonged to Shams al-Daula, Nawab of Dacca, 1822-31, whose son appears to have given it to Dr. Wise, then Principal of the Hooghly College. It may well be a copy of an earlier painting. The College possesses another portrait.
Literature: Syud Hassain, ‘Haji Mahomed Muhsin and the Hooghly Imambarah’, ‘Bengal past and presen’t, vol. 2, Jan-June 1908, 62-73. Reproduced: ‘Bengal past and present’, vol. 5, Jan-June, 1910, 159.

After inheriting a large fortune, he settled at Hooghly in Bengal and spent his money freely on religious and charitable objects, such as the Imambara and Muhammadan seminary at Hooghly and the Hooghly College, Chinsura.
