Three-quarter length portrait, looking towards the right. He has greyish hair and whiskers, black suit and tie. In his right hand he holds a telescope, his hat by his side.
Size: 109 by 84 cms.
Presented by Lord Brassey via the Indian Institute, Oxford, June, 1962.
After a short legal career, Brassey entered politics. His main interest lay in naval affairs and he accomplished reforms in naval administration and maritime policy. In 1880 he was Civil Lord of the Admirality under Gladstone, from 1884 to 1885 Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, and from 1895 to 1900 Governor of Victoria. K.C.B., 1881; G.C.B., 1906. He provided the largest single contribution to the Indian Institue, Oxford, which was built 1883 to 1885 and 1892 to 1894.
