- Scope & Content:
-
Captain Peter Marriette, half-length, slightly to left, with powdered hair, wearing a blue velvet coat and white silk waistcoat, both trimmed with gold lace.
Signed ‘T.Kettle’ and dated ‘1769’ at lower left.
Oil on canvas, 75 by 63.5 cms.
Purchased 1995.
One other portrait of this date is known, a seated half-length of Lord Pigot, Governor of Madras from 1755 to 1763. Kettle must have started this painting before leaving England, possibly hoping to sell it to the Madras government, or using it as an entree to portrait commissions. The present painting is therefore the earliest formal professional portrait to have been painted entirely in India. Peter Marriette was a successful free merchant in Madras, after resigning from the navy. He applied for land on the Choultry Plain and built one of the first two garden houses in this newly fashionable area in 1761; his garden was often mentioned as a point of reference. Marriette was appointed Mayor of Madras in 1761 and again for the second half of 1762.
