The hostage princes, Abdul Khaliq and Muiz-ud-din, sons of Tipu Sultan, delivering the definitive treaty to Lord Cornwallis, 19 March 1793. Artist(s): Brown, Mather (1761-1831)
- Scope & Content:
-
The hostage princes, 'Abdul Khaliq and Muiz-ud-din, sons of Tipu Sultan, delivering the definitive treaty to Lord Cornwallis, 19 March 1793.
Sepia wash on tinted paper; 43.5 by 48 cm.
Purchased 1971.
Note: This drawing seems related to the stipple engraving by Daniel Orme after Brown’s oil painting ‘The Delivery of the Definitive Treaty by the Hostage Princes into the hands of Lord Cornwallis’. The present whereabouts of the oil painting is not known; it was in the Rosebery sale at Christies, 5 May 1939. The drawing is possibly a rough sketch by Brown for the engraver, incised lines suggest a tracing was made of the figures.
Published: H. de Almeida and G.H. Gilpin, 'Indian Renaissance: British Romantic Art and the Prospect of India,' 2005, pl. 66. Note that these authors attribute the portraits to John Smart.
