Poetical texts in Persian
Contents
Poems in Persian, in Hebrew characters.
Language(s): Judeo-Persian, Hebrew
ff. 1r-349vTitle: PoemsTitle: שיריםPersian poems embodying the narrative of the Pentateuch. The volume begins with dedicatory poems, then follows Genesis (f. 5r), and Exodus (f. 168r). The remaining portions are not marked.
F. 348 contains (in a different hand) a duplicate of a portion of Genesis.
A number of Persian stanzas with Hebrew headings, f. 2r.
A piyuṭ of Eliyah ben Binyamin ha-Leṿi, f. 347v.
The colophons seem to have been written in a different, possibly later, hand than the main scribe. The later scribe may be identified with the writer of the short note on page 323a (Khudādād ben Mūsā; כדאדאד בן מוצא), although a closer paleographical examination is required. The second colophon states that the scribe of “the Book of Shāhīn” is deceased. Interestingly, the name of the scribe mentioned in this colophon is Amīnā, which happen to be the pen-name of the Jewish poet Benjamin ben Mishael of Kāshān (1672/73 - after 1732/33). The date of copying (1702) makes it possible that Shāhīn's work was indeed copied by Benjamin ben Mishael in the city of Kāshān. However, there is always the possibility that a later scribe attributed this manuscript to Amīnā in order to increase its value. (Information provided by Ofir Haim.)
