Chapter 8 of the Lotus Sutra (Sanskrit. Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra).
An elaborately decorated manuscript of Chapter Eight of the Lotus Sutra (Skt. Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra) the “Prophecy of Enlightenment for Five Hundred Disciples”, believed to be one of a set of scrolls commissioned by ex-Emperor Go-Mizunoo and dedicated to the Tōshōgū Shrine, the mausoleum of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, at Nikkō in 1636.
A colophon, dated Kan'ei 13 [1636], lists at least 10 scribes and craftsmen involved in the production of the manuscript under the direction of Daikyōji Hōgen Dōi 大経師法眼道以.

Dimensions: total length of scroll is 276 x 3770 mm. Frontispiece measures 276 x 293 mm.
Format: the text is written in gold ink in vertical columns, bordered by triple lines in gold, on indigo-dyed paper. The reverse of the scroll is ornamented in gold and silver with stencilled geometric designs. The gilt metalwork on the roller bears the three-leaved hollyhock, the Tokugawa family crest. The frontispiece painted in gold, probably by an artist of the Kimura School, depicts, in the upper section, Buddha granting promises of Buddhahood to his disciples while below is the story of a poor man who finds he possess a priceless jewel - the teachings of Buddha.
Binding: the frontispiece is backed with pale yellow brocade cover decorated with floral designs in gold with metal corner pieces. A woven tartan silk cord is attached to the cover by a flower-shaped bronze fitting.
