Description: 3 kan, 3 satsu, in a box. (Maki 上) ff. 27; (maki 中) ff. 24; (maki 下) ff. 34. 26 x 187 mm. Fukurotoji.
Blockprint. Printing frame 215 x 170 mm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin.
Hiragana-majiri text, with printed furigana, dakuten and kutōten. 12 lines to page, c. 20 characters to line.
Original black covers with embossed lattice and peony design. Original title slips on left with printed gedai: Saikoku (tsunogaki) Shimabara kassenki 西國 (角書) 嶋原合戰記. Title from mokurokudai and from naidai at head of text in each maki. Hashiragaki: 高上 (中, 下) + folio no.
Edition: An undated edition, probably dating from mid- to late-17th century. Editions of Keian 2 (1649), Kanbun 13 (1673), Jōkyō 5 (1688), Hōei 1 (1704) and Hōei 5 (1708) are known but given the connection with Kaempfer, the present copy must have been published before 1692.
Contents: A semi-fictional account, as described by an 'eye-witness', of the Shimabara uprising of Christian converts, rōnin, peasants and local daimyō, against the shogunate, 1637-8. The work is traditionally classed as a kana-zōshi or as a historical record.
