Description: 20 kan, formerly in 30 satsu, now rebound in 3 vols. western style. 21.7 x 15.8 cm. (average). Fukurotoji.
Blockprint. Printing frame 18.2 x 13 cm. (average). Single-line borders. No printed hanshin.
Hiragana-majiri text, with mana 真名 characters printed alongside text of Man'yōshū poems. 16 lines to page, variable no. of characters to line.
Renewed buff, brown and silver front covers of maki 1 之上, 12 之下 (wrongly bound in at head of maki 7) and maki 13 十三, only. Printed title slips, possibly original to this issue, on covers of maki 12 下 and 13 only. Gedai: 萬葉拾穗抄. Naidai at head of preface: 萬葉拾穗抄. Naidai at head of each maki: Man'yōshū 萬葉集. Man 万 + maki no. + folio no. printed on inner (binding) edge of each folio recto.
Edition: No dated edition of the Edo period survives. The first edition was published in 20 satsu with second preface dated Jōkyō 4 (1687) and batsu dated Jōkyō 5 (1688). For the second edition, published in 30 satsu, a further preface was added, with date Genroku 3 (1690), as noted under Imprint above.
Contents: Text of the great 8th century waka anthology Man'yōshū 萬葉集, with explanatory text and detailed commentary. Begun by Matsunaga Teitoku 松永貞德 in Tenna 2 (1682), continued over a period of 4 years by Kitamura Kigin 北村季吟, and completed in Jōkyō 3 (1686). The date of completion of each maki is recorded at the end of that maki.
