Imprint: [Edo] , Chōkōdō, Genroku 2, 1689 Kanki on fol. 1lb of maki 下 reads: 峕元禄二年己巳正月良辰 書肆武陽 / 畫工 某圖之 / 長岡堂 梓板.
Description: 2 kan, 2 satsu, in a chitsu case. (Maki 上) ff. 12; (maki 下) ff. 11. 27.1 x 18.5 cm. Fukurotoji.
Blockprint. Printing frame 22.3 x 16.9 cm. (average). Single-line borders, with internal vertical and horizontal rules framing text and illustrations on each page. No fishtail design on hanshin.
Hiragana-majiri text, with printed furigana and dakuten. Variable number of lines to page and characters to line.
Original mid-blue covers with original printed title slip, centrally placed, remaining on maki 上 only. Gedai: Gachū (tsunogaki) ezu no hayashi 畫註 (角書) 繪圖のはやし. Title from naidai at head of preface in maki 上. Hashiragaki: E jō (ge) ヱ上 (下) + folio no.
Edition: The only Edo-period edition.
Contents: Primarily a picture book, intended probably as a manual for teaching drawing and painting, with brief notes on the personages illustrated.

Condition: Generally good. Some soiled and stained folios, and marginal worm damage (repaired).
Impression: Shozuri or near.
Illustrations: Inset sumizuri illustrations, 1 to 4 per page, on every page except those containing preface and batsu. The woodcuts depict incidents from the lives of Chinese and Japanese monks and sages, including a frontispiece (tobira-e) showing the Sixteen Arhats (Jūroku rakan 十六羅漢). Artist not identified by name in the kanki.
Seals of ownership: Large square red seal, Kimura bijutsu sōsho no in 木村美術叢書之印, on first page of maki 上 and 下.
