Chinese text without reading marks. Chiefly illustrations, with prefaces and endnotes.
Pale blue front cover of maki 1 only, with printed title-slip (both original), within western-style half-leather binding. Gedai of maki 1: Kokon gafu 古今畫譜. Titles from naidai.
Edition: The only known pre-Meiji Japanese edition of a set of eight Chinese works first published in 1620 and 1621 by Qinghuizhai 清繪齋 and Jiyazhai 集雅齋, respectively, of Suzhou province (蘇州). The complete set of eight kan is commonly known by the collective title Hasshu gafu, but this title does not appear anywhere in the book. The order of publication of component maki is uncertain, but it seems likely that maki 6, 7, 8, and 4 of the BL copy (listed under Description above) were published first, in 1620, followed by maki 2, 3, 1 and 5 in 1621. The colophon is usually found at the end of maki 5. The BL copy has therefore been bound in an arbitrary order.
Contents: Blockprinted copies of Chinese paintings, with some accompanying text, depicting flowering plants, birds and flowers, landscapes, fan paintings and illustrations to Tang poems. Each maki contains elaborate prefaces and endnotes. This work was of seminal importance for its influence on Japanese artists of the nanga and Kanō schools in the late-17th and 18th centuries.
