Variant title: Shuryōgon-gyō gisho chūkyō 首楞嚴經義疏注經 [首楞厳経義疏注経]
Author/compiler: Zixuan 子璿, Chinese monk.
Imprint: N.p., Kō no Moronao 高師直, Ryakuō 2, 1339. Kango at end of maki 10 (2), printed in a running hand reproducing a batsubun probably written by Moronao himself, reads: 師直熟思今生〓尤不可勝計矧是曠劫 / 罪障何以消除因玆謹開此 / 眞詮之板以拔積業之根所冀上報四恩 / 下資三有同出妄想昏域共入 / 楞嚴覺場 / 暦應二禩季春中澣武藏守高師直敬誌.
Description: 6 kan (of 10), formerly in 9 jō, rebound in 2 vols. western style. Incomplete set, comprising maki 3 (1) ff. 37; maki 4 (1) ff. 42; maki 4 (2) ff. 47; maki 5 (1) ff. 32; maki 6 (2) ff. 37; maki 9 (1) ff. 42; maki 9 (2) ff. 39; maki 10 (1) ff. 30; maki 10 (2) ff. 33. Each maki is in two parts: 一 and 二. 27.4 x 16.1 cm. Now fukurotoji, re-sewn and re-covered in western style, with maki and folio numbering on inner edge of each folded leaf. In Kawase's opinion, joins in sheets suggest that the book was originally in orihon form, but the irregular spacing and position of joins may equally well indicate a roll (巻子本) as the original format.
Blockprint. Printing frame variable between 23.4 and 24.3 (height) x 13.5 cm. (width). Single-line borders above and below text. No borders at inner edge of folded leaf. No vertical rules.
Kanbun text, with manuscript reading marks, okurigana and kaeriten in red, dating from Muromachi period. 5 lines (large kanji) or 10 lines (small kanji) to page, 14-16 characters (large) to line.
Brown front covers (Edo period) of maki 3 (1) and maki 9 (1), of kōzo paper, and back cover of maki 10 (2) only, within western style half-leather binding. No title slips. Manuscript gedai (late-Edo period) : 首楞嚴義疏注經巻第三之一 (第九之一). Title from naidai.
Edition: Gozan-ban, published by Kō no Moronao 高師直, steward of Ashikaga Takauji, in 1339. This impressive edition, with large bold kanji characteristic of Chinese Song editions, is believed to be modelled on an earlier Kamakura edition directly re-cut from a Song exemplar, of which only one jō 帖 (maki 5) survives in Daitōkyū Kinen Bunko. This has a manuscript shikigo dated Gentoku 2 元徳二年 (1330). The present copy, apparently an early impression of the Moronao edition, differs in some respects from the two surviving shoin (初印) impressions in Kunaichō Shoryōbu and Ōtani Daigaku. It is made up in fukurotoji and not orihon form, and it is the only copy yet located with 5 lines to the page. The Ōtani copy is in orihon form and has 4 lines to the half-fold (see GK, pl. 89-90) ; the Kunaichō copy is described (Zushoryō tenseki kaidai, kanseki hen 図書寮典籍解題・漢籍篇, p. 183) as being bound in detchō style and having 5 lines to the half-fold, whereas the illustrations of it in Kyūkan eifu 旧刊影譜, no. 26, pl. 49-50, seem to show orihon form and 4-6 lines to the half-fold. There is some doubt, therefore, whether the present copy belongs to the earliest impression (初印). Later impressions of the Moronao edition contain hokoku, replacing worn blocks, but these do not appear in the present copy. A new edition was issued in late-Nanbokuchō or early-Muromachi period, with 6 or 8 lines to the half-fold. Some copies of this are undated; in others the original kanki signed by Moronao is skilfully imitated on a re-cut block.
Contents: A commentary, compiled by Zixuan in 1030, on the Shuryōgon-gyō, also known as Daibutchō nyorai mitsuin shushō ryōgi shobosatsu mangyō shuryōgon-gyō 大佛頂如來密因修證了義諸菩薩萬行首楞嚴經, a sutra related to the Śūraṃgama-samādhi-sūtra.
