Batak pustaha, treebark book folded concertina-style, with two wooden covers, and two plaited bamboo clasps. Damaged along one length.
Containing on one side a text on divination using the cock oracle, and on the other, a prescription for destructive magic.
A note attached to the upper board reads: "From a visit to the British Museum 19.4.72. This is the note book of a medicine man dictated to his pupils. It comes from Sumatra and is approx. 200 years old. There are about 20 in the British Museum. No one can translate it. Medicine books often have cocks."

18 folios; folded tree-bark. Text on sides A.1-16 withdrawings of cockerels in red, and B.1-4, with a pencilled note in roman scripton p. B.6.
Condition: pages very stained; damaged with loss of text along the left-hand length of side A, with a larger loss on A.16.
Decoration: many black and red ink drawings on ff. [A].1, 3, 11, 13-17, 23-27.
Binding: two plain wooden covers with two plaited rattan clasps.
