From Simla: Two snapshots: Bake with dog, and two dogs. The Bakes were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Visser; the only thing about dogs I found in the letter is: "Patiala is a darling", but the Vissers' famous dog Patiala was much larger than the dogs in the photographs.
From Erode: Mangalore, probably May 7th. Compare the horse-masks 153, 154 with those in Cananore (Chirakkal) no.123, 124. The mask made of Arecasheath prepared then and there. I seldom saw a more realistic horse than this hobby-horse once it began to gallop. I think the boys covered with grass were devils, whereas the man on the horse played a somewhat clownish part, wearing a topi, which people always feel as more or less clownish.
