The entries refer to Clive in the third person. Although the entries are in Clive's handwriting it is possible that the journal is copied from the ship's records.

Clive has not included the name of the intended recipient. A different hand has dated the letter and notes that this was the draft of a letter to Mr G. Grenville.

The letter is not signed and there is no salutation. The author complains of the unusual length of the voyage so far, suggesting that he was probably part of Clive's group, if so the date must be in 1764.
The letter was written upon its author's arrival in Madras and outlines the expenses of setting up an establishment there. The author also hopes that his correspondent will exercise his interest to get him transferred to Bengal. It is possible that the author was Clive. The letter is incomplete.
