The Madras Medical Board institute a prize essay competition on the subjects of beriberi and rheumatism - the winner of both prizes each worth 500 rupees is Assistant Surgeon John Grant Malcolmson of the Madras European Regiment - he is subsequently appointed Secretary to the Madras Medical Board.
