Struck in 1861, the medal was the same as the China 1842 issue minus a date on the reverse. Five clasps were issued: Fatshan 1857, Canton 1857, Taku Forts 1858, Taku Forts 1860, Pekin 1860. Clasps only were awarded to troops already holding the 1842 medal.
