It is possible that the letter is incomplete; certainly the closing phrases have been omitted. A note states that the letter was published in 1785. It is in Clive's handwriting.

Only the first part of the letter survives; in some cases the text breaks off mid paragraph, suggesting that other pages once existed, in others it is clear that no more of the letter was ever copied. Some are in Clive's handwriting.

The letters are dated between 5 June 1765 and 4 July 1766. The list gives the dates and places of writing the letters and in some cases an indication of the letter's content.

The goods were received in 1766. In addition to listing the contents of the numbered boxes, the second folio contains a notification of a small painted box directed to Lady Clive at Berkeley Square.
