Although the poems were composed at various dates between 1869 and 1881, it seems probable that, with the exception of 1407-1409 and 1420, the MSS. were written in 1880-1881 when Rossetti was preparing Ballads and Sonnets, 1881. A3840, 3847, 3848, 3849, 3852, 3857, 3859, 3860 and 3861 may well have once formed part of the same note...
