Head-and-shoulders portrait of Samuel Wells Williams (1812-1884), missionary, diplomat and sinologue. Williams first came to China in 1833 and later served as interpreter on Commodore Perry's diplomatic mission to Japan. In retirement he was professor of Chinese at Yale.
