John Gielgud Archive. Photographs relating to Gielgud’s professional career and personal life; 1904–1993. Many of the albums have been haphazardly indexed by means of play and film titles affixed to the spines on embossed plastic tape.
John Gielgud Archive. Photograph albums presented to Gielgud on his birthday over a period of 17 years by the celebrated American theatre attorney Arnold Weissberger. John Gielgud Archive. Two looseleaf albums of newspaper cuttings relating to the early years of Gielgud’s career; 20th Century. It is not evident who was responsible for their compilation, but that it was a close friend is likely from the witty and knowing placement of a cutting dating from the late 1930s trumpeting the news of Gielgud’s likely marriage to Peggy Ashcroft.
John Gielgud Archive. Albums of cuttings, programmes, handbills and other ephemera, and some letters relating to Gielgud’s career; 1922-1938. Although Gielgud himself was probably not responsible for their immediate composition, the books contain a number of programmes and handbills annotated in his hand. 370 x 270 mm., except for Add. 81935, 81938 and 81939, which are quarto in size; quarter-bound, in green, with gold-stamped lines on corners and spine, except for Add. 81539, which is b...
John Gielgud Archive. Albums of cuttings, programmes, handbills and other ephemera, and some letters relating to Gielgud’s career; 1939-1985. Compiled by Gielgud’s sister Eleanor, who worked in the box-office at the Globe Theatre in the 1930s and became Gielgud’s secretary in 1946. Although the collection of press cuttings is remarkably full, there is anecdotal evidence to the effect that she took a personal dislike to certain periodicals and refused to keep cuttings from their pages.
