The original letters were written by Henry Strachey, in his role as Clive's secretary. The recipients include both military and civil persons, on both official business and responding to personal requests. The copies do not appear to be in Strachey's hand.

The letters constitute reports from Smith on all aspects of his regiment's affairs, including the provision of new barracks and relations with local authorities. In some cases copies have also been made of other letters and documents enclosed with Smith's letter. Most letters are numbered
