Scope & Content:
Fragment containing a portion from the eighth book of Xenophon’s Symposium. The fragment comes from the same roll as a papyrus fragment of the Universitätsbibliothek of Giessen, inventoried as 175. This was a luxury edition. Column 1: Symposium VIII.6-7; Column 2: Symposium VIII.8-9.

Fragment of the same papyrus roll from which a papyrus of the Universitätsbibliothek of Giessen, inventoried as 175, comes. The British Library piece, slightly damaged by insect holes and torn at the top, preserves the top of two columns written along the fibres. Of the first, only the ends of 9 lines survive; of the second 13 lines remain, some mutilated. The columns are narrow, measuring around 45 mm. The space between the columns measure around 20 mm; the upper margin survives to 75 mm. The Giessen papyrus contains the foot of two columns and preserves the lower margin, which measures 85-90 mm. Between these two fragments there would have been three columns of 28-30 lines each. The back is blank. The British Library fragment is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Two fragments from a papyrus roll, darkened by patches, abraded in places and with small insect holes throughout; bearing writing on both sides.

The front preserves portions of two columns written along the fibres: 20 lines survive of the first column, some of which are very fragmentary, and 18 lines of the second, which is badly damaged; the column width is c. 65 mm, with 15 lines to the column; the intercolumn measures 20 mm. The back preserves portions of three incomplete columns running across the fibres, abraded in places. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Fragment of a papyrus roll the beginning of which is preserved in papyrus of the Berlin collection published as BGU II 585. Writing runs on both sides, along the fibres on the front and across them on the back. The papyrus is damaged by holes and is abraded and rubbed off occasionally. The front contains portions of six columns; of the first, only the ends of the lines survive; the third and fourth columns lack part of the top; the second and the fifth are complete; the sixth only has the beginnings of the lines. Upper and lower margins are extant. The back preserves parts of four columns, with the first lacking the left portion and the second and third damaged at the top. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Papyrus sheet lacking the left portion, slightly damaged along the vertical folding lines and at the top. Writing runs along the fibres on one side, the back being blank. There is one wide column of 22 lines lacking the beginning. Upper, lower and right margins are extant, with the right being minimal and irregular. The blank space at the bottom measures 52 mm. A sheet-join running across the fibres along the height of the sheet is visible in the right edge, at 3-7 mm from the edge. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Two fragments being the upper and lower portions of a light-brown papyrus roll. Both sides bear writing, with the text running along the fibres on the front and across them on the back. The back was rotated 180 degrees. Each side contains portions of three columns, mutilated in the middle and worm-eaten throughout. The columns on the back were numbered 10-12 at the top.
