Half-length seated portrait, reading a book. Sir Robert Hart (1835-1911) entered the Chinese Consular Service in 1854 and joined the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service at Canton in 1859, He served as Inspector-General of Customs from 1863-1906.
