Scope & Content:
The picture depicted four monks reading Punch, an advertisement for Pears soap on the back cover. The painting had nothing to do with Punch, but had been commissioned for a supplement to the Pears Annual in 1891.
Contains press-cuttings and items relating to A. P. Herbert’s stunt presenting a cheque written on a cow to a bank and the "peccavi" ("I have Sindh [sinned]") pun.
