Rana Architecture: The Ranas were heavily influenced by European style. This is evident in their fashion, art and architecture. The palaces and gardens are very distinct from the native structures and emulate Victorian England.
Toran Bhawan in Naxal was built by Prime Miinter Bir Shamsher in 1894 for his son Indra on the site of a Mahadev Temple and several dharmasalas which had to be demolished.
Sashi Bhawan in Jhamshikhel was built by Prime Minister Juddha Shamsher for his son Sashi in 1940. The building was nationalise in 1963 and is now the residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Nepal Army.
