Bamboo mat-maker and wife; the man carries a knife and bamboo-mat basket on his head, the woman carries a hand punkah. Inscribed: ‘The Burrod tribe, or Bamboo Mat-Maker.’
Toddy-tapper and wife; the man carries a ladder, rope and earthen pot, the woman a pot of juice. Inscribed: ‘The Tansa, or Toddy man, the toddy is a favourite Indian beverage procured from the Cocoanut & Palmyra trees, & when fermented is very intoxicating.’
Tank-digger with wife and baby; the man carries a mattock, stick and rat, the woman carries her baby and digging tool and basket. Inscribed: ‘The Vaddavar or tank digger. A tank is a reservoir of water.’
Basket-makers; both man and woman carry baskets. Inscribed: ‘The Coroavaur’;’ or Basket Maker. This tribe of men live in the woods, and answer to the description of our Gypsies.’
