Sultan Yusuf ‘Adil Shah of Bijapur (reg.1489-1510), standing facing half left and crowned. Inscription (erroneous): ‘Mahomed ‘Ali Kutub Shah’. 212 by 110 mm. Note: cf. Yusuf’s idealised portrait in the succession portraits of the rulers of Bijapur (Add.Or.4242).
A nobleman in Hyderabad costume, standing looking right, holding flower and sword. Inscription (erroneous): ‘Sultan Abul Hasan.’. 195 by 110 mm. Note: He bears no resemblance to the know portraits of Sultan Abu’l Hasan of Golconda (reg.1672-87).
Tipu Sultan of Mysore (reg.1782-99), head and shoulder looking left. Inscription: ‘Tippu Sultan’. 202 by 130 mm. Note: The usual portrait, based on the original oil painting formerly attibuted to F. Cherry (F28), but in fact by a south Indian artist.
Shah Jahan, standing nimbate looking right with sword over shoulder. Inscription: ‘Padshah of Burhanpur.’. 142 by 85 mm. Note: An odd description, but Shah Jahan was for many years based at Burhanpur for the Mughal conquest of Golconda and Bijapur.
One of the Baridi princes of Bidar, standing looking right. Inscription:’ M’Alik Barid.’ 203 by 126 mm. Note: Doubtless a member of the royal house of Bidar, which reigned from 1492-1624. Repaired and retouched at end of 19th century.
