The NRA was founded in 1860 with the aim of encouraging rifle shooting as a sport. For nearly fifty years Spencer acted as a member of the council, serving as chairman in 1867-1868. One of the highlights of the NRA calendar was the prize competition held each year on Wimbledon Common, part of Lord Spencer's estates until circa 1865. Nine volumes.
