Evelyn Waugh: letters from Evelyn Waugh (b.1903, d.1966) to Thomas Balston (b.1883, d.1967), a partner at Waugh’s publishers Gerald Duckworth and Company, in a black quarter morocco box and marbled paper folder ; [April] 1928-4 Dec. 1951. Autograph. Some letters dated by recipient. Many letters concern details of the publication of Waugh’s works, including Rossetti: his Life and Works (1928) and Labels: a Mediterranean Journal (1930), as well as Remote People (1931) and Ninety-Two Days (1934) for which Waugh attaches draft blurbs. Some letters (ff. 11-16) are written from Egypt during Waugh’s Mediterranean cruise in 1929, and recount his wife’s poor health. Further letters (ff. 17-19) are written soon after the breakdown of his marriage with Evelyn Waugh, (‘She-Evelyn’), née Gardner (1903–1994). Purchased at the sale of the Property of Anthony Hobson at Sotheby’s, 28 June 1996; previously sold at the Thomas Balston sale at Christie’s, 17 July 1968.
