The poems on ff. 4, 4b, 8, 10, 16-17, 21, 24-25, 38, 39, 40, 41b, 43, 50, 54, 55, 69, 70, 78-80, 85, published in his three collections of Poems, 1928, 1930 and 1933, in The Orators, 1932, The Dog beneath the Skin, 1935, and in Collected Shorter Poems, 1927-1957, 1966. Those on ff. 3, 4, 54, uncollected by the author, published in The Adelphi for June and Dec. 1931. Those on ff. 3, 4, 8, 10, 20, 21, 52, 53, 66, published by John Whitehead, 'Auden: an early poetical notebook', The London Magazine, N.S., vol. 5, no. 2, May 1965, pp. 85-93, and by John Fuller, A Reader's Guide to W. H. Auden, 1970, p. 29. The prose on ff. 10b-14, 43b-45, 47-48, 55b, is taken in part from Auden's reading in psychology and religion. For a detailed description, see A. J.
