EMBLEMS or pictures, drawn with pen and ink, illustrative of proverbs, etc. Imperfect at beginning and end; numbered 39- 354. Each picture has eight lines of French verse, of varying length, rhymes ababbcbc, assigned either to "l'acteur" or "le personage." While not unlike in form to the Emblemata of A. Alciati (1522, etc.), the book is more closely parallel to Add. MS. 17297 and to a Paris MS., fonds fr. 24461. The latter, which is said to be a book of cartoons for tapestry, contains verses composed by Henri Baude (cf Les vers de Maître Henri Baude, ed. Quicherat, 1856, and Leroux de Lincy in Lacroix, Le Moyen Age et la Renaissance, ii. 8, and in Mélanges de la Soc. des Bibliophiles français (1850), Biblioth. des dues de Bourbon). The first example (no. 39) begins, "Ung patissier doit soirs et mains Mettre paine et je luy en prye" and the last (no. 354) ends, "Car lospital va conquestant Qui de son serf fait son seigneur." In two instances (ff. 40 b, 50 b) a late 16th cent. hand has noted Italian equivalents for the proverbs. Paper; ff. 151. 8 in. x 5½ in. Early xvi. cent.
