SLEDGING DIARY and memoranda of Edward Adrian Wilson, M.B., Antarctic explorer, written in pencil in a copy of Wellcome’s Medical Diary and Visiting List for 1910; 1911-1912. The diary, 1 Nov. 1911-27 Feb. 1912 (ff. 177b-221) begins on the day of the departure from Cape Evans of the expedition under Captain R. F. Scott to the South Pole and ends about a month before the writer’s death. It was published together with other diaries of Wilson now in the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, by H. G. R. King as Diary of the Terra Nova Expedition to the Antarctic 1910-1912, 1972. Interspersed are rough sketches of the landscape, cairns, etc., some of which have been reproduced by King. The memoranda (ff. 250b-253, 306, 307) consist chiefly of notes of cairns and their positions, 16 Nov. 1911-13 Feb. 1912. See also Brit. Mus. Quart., I, 1926-1927, p.81, and G. Seaver, Edward Wilson of the Antarctic, 1933, pp. 269-292 passim.
Paper; ff. iii+307. Octavo. 1911-1912. Discovered with the bodies of Wilson and his companions by Dr E. L. Atkinson in November 1912; later in the possession of Mrs Oriana Fanny Wilson, the writer’s widow, who deposited it on loan for exhibition with the Scott Antarctic diaries (now Add. MSS. 51024-51041), 9 Oct. 1926. Presented by Miss Geraldine O’Grady and Miss Rosalind Atkinson, her residuary legatees.
