These are two of the three volumes 'of my owne Meditations and Transactions of my Life' bequeathed by Alice Thornton to her eldest daughter Alice, wife of Thomas Comber, D.D., Dean of Durham (Surtees Society, vol. 62, p. 338). The first volume bears two successive ownership inscriptions (1789 and 1800) of their descendant, Alice Thornton's great-great grandson, Thomas Comber, vicar of Creech St Michael, Somerset. By 1875 they had descended to Henry George Wandesford Comber, Rector of Oswaldkirk (Surtees Society, vol.. 62, p. xiv). The volumes were sold separately at Sotheby's, 29 June 1982, lot 17, and 13 Dec. 1994, lot 44) and came into the Paula Peyraud collection

'A Book of Remembrances of all the remarkable deliverances of myself, husband and children with their births, and other remarks as concerning myself and family, beginning from the year 1626', of which these two volumes are said to be `an amplification', was in 1875 said to be in the ownership of another descendant, Thomas Comber of Newton-le-Willows (Surtees Society, 62, pp. xv, 338, 347). It is now part of the Comber Collection at Durham Cathedral Library: Book of Remembrances (DCL, GB-0033-CCOM 38), as is another volume which was used for the Surtees Society edition: Book 2 (DCL, GB-0033-CCOM 7).
