Papers and notebooks of the writer Julian Gustave Symons (b. 1912, d. 1994). Autograph and typewritten drafts, often corrected, and autograph notebooks, together with material collected whilst conducting research for publications, often consisting of photocopies from books and journals, as well as agreements signed with publishers and broadcasters. Included amongst the papers are copies of correspondence from Julian Symons’s older brother Alphonse James Albert Symons, Thomas Stearns Eliot and George Orwell, copies of material held by the Federal Bureau of Investigation relating to Dashiell Hammett, and miscellaneous material relating to Hugh Gordon Porteus and to the George Orwell Memorial Trust.
