- The records in this Collection were created as part of the Project: EAP060 Pilot project to identify endangered African diaspora collections at the major archives of the province of Matanzas, Cuba. The original files are held by the Archivo Historico Provincial de Matanzas.

- Administrative Context:
- EAP060 was funded by the Endangered Archives Programme. It created digital copies of records held by the Archivo Historico Provincial de Matanzas and the Catedral de Matanzas. The Gobierno Provincial was the highest government body in the Province of Matanzas during the colonial period. It had responsibility for matters relating to slavery, Africans and people of African descent in the Province. The Governor of Matanzas headed the Provincial Government. This position was appointed by the Captain General, the highest authority in Colonial Cuba, who resided in Havana. The office of the Governor of Matanzas generated all the documentation of the Fondo de Govierno Provincial. The whole of the Fonds contains all official correspondence on the economic, political and social life in Matanazas Province. In particular, it contains all documents related to slavery, Africans and Afro-Descendants. All documents within this Fonds related to slavery, Africans and Afro-Descendants in the province have been copied by the EAP060 project.
