Scope & Content:

The diversity and unity of the collection reflect the closely integrated professional strands of Cobbing's life and work, as poet, publisher and performer of sound poetry. In addition to a representative range of published work and material in draft spanning Cobbing's career, the collection includes papers relating to Writers Forum, to the Association of Little Presses (ALP), and to the New River Project. Through a combination of pocket diary entries and an extensive run of flyers and programmes, it is possible to chart Cobbing's continuous course as a performance poet, at home and overseas, from the 1960s to his death in 2002.

The collection includes considerable material from the 1950s, when Cobbing was engaged, as teacher and organiser, in various local community arts groups and societies in Hendon and Finchley, involving contemporary film presentations, art and photography exhibitions, theatre performances, and poetry workshops. Cobbing's early involvement in community-based arts programmes throws considerable light upon his subsequent involvement in the counter-culture of the 1960s, and his service on the General Council of the Poetry Society as Honorary Treasurer in the 1970s. The collection contains extensive correspondence files reflecting the many facets of Cobbing's working life and the esteem in which he was held, across the world, as a performer of poetry and as an enduring influence on a younger generation of poets.

The collection has been organised into seven Sub-fonds:

  • (1) Personal Material;
  • (2) Hendon and Finchley;
  • (3) Correspondence;
  • (4) Works;
  • (5) Writers Forum, Association of Little Presses, and New River Project;
  • (6) Bob Cobbing and His Contemporaries;
  • (7) The Poetry Society, and Poets Conference.

Considerable sorting of the papers was undertaken prior to their receipt by the British Library. The structure of the collection does not reflect, therefore, an original order but has been largely based upon the organization of the papers as they were received, with some modifications.
