- Title:
- Letters of Rev Thomas Moore (c.1825-c.1903) and his wife Dorothy Moore (nee Thompson 1835-1924) from India
- Scope & Content:
-
Letters of the Moore family, mainly written during their residence in India in the 1850s, principally by the Rev Thomas Moore, the Hon East India Company's Chaplain to the Forces at Cawnpore, and by his wife Dorothy (Dora), addressed to Moore's mother, Mrs Moore of Holt, Norfolk, as well as to Dora's father, the Rev James C Thompson of Calcutta, Moore's brother Tony, his sister Charlotte (Charlie), to his daughters and others. The archive comprises some 100 letters and journal-letters, often of considerable length, dating from between 1853-1903, generally closely-written, some cross-written, on flimsy paper.
Over forty letters were written during the Indian Mutiny 1857-58 while Moore served as Chaplain to the Indian Army at Cawnpore and his wife Dora occasionally nursed wounded soldiers. Letters from Moore to his daughters were written in England in the 1890s.
