- User Conditions:
- Administrative Context:
- The Modern Playscripts Collection began in September 1968, as a result of the passing of the Theatres Act which became law on 26 September 1968. It was intended to continue, as far as possible, the Lord Chamberlain’s Plays collection, which contains the scripts deposited to obtain a licence from 1824 to 1968. In summer of 1968, a number of prominent theatre researchers realised that a valuable resource for the history of drama would be cut short when the new Theatres Act did away with the legal necessity for theatre managements to send a copy of any new play to the Lord Chamberlain in order to obtain a licence before the play could be produced for hire. At very short notice Section 11 was added to the bill, which stated that a copy of every new and hitherto unpublished play performed in public in Great Britain should be delivered within one month of first performance to the Department of Manuscripts at the British Museum Library (as it then was). This right was subsequently transferred to the British Library on its formation in 1973.
- Finding Aids:
- Only the first tranche of scripts is fully catalogued. Plays for the years 1851-1863 were catalogued as part of the BL/RHUL “Buried Treasures” joint project funded by the AHRC. There are card indexes and handlists available in the Manuscripts Reading Room at St Pancras.
