ff. 1-245r: Liber Animalium, consisting of 245 pen-and-ink drawings of different species of animals and mythical creatures, each accompanied by a description, beginning 'Cui rei data est fabula ut hoc ita accidat aquile quonia cu[m] olim homo esset sospiti iniuria'. The descriptions include details of the anatomy, development and behaviour of the creatures, and are based on Aristotle, Historia animalium, Pliny the Elder, Naturalis historia, Aeliani, De historia animalium and Albertus Magnus, De natura animalibus.
ff. 115-173 have been cropped with the loss of some marginal notes.
The description of the basilisk (f. 129r) is based on the works of the Roman authors Claudius Aelianus and Pliny the Elder. According to Aelianus, the basilisk was only the width of a palm but it could kill someone instantly with its stare, touch and breath. Pliny claimed that the basilisk could be killed using the scent of a weasel.
ff. 245v-247v: A drawing and description of Hercules and the Greek Muses; the source for the description is Lilio Gregorio Giraldi, Herculis Vita, originally published Basel, 1539.
ff. 248r-255v: Index animalium, two alphabetical lists of flying ('volucres') and terrestrial ('terrestria') animals.

Foliation: ff. iv + 256 (ff. i and ii are labels attached to the spine, f. iii is an upper flyleaf and f. iv is a paste-down to the lower binding + 1 unfoliated paper flyleaf at the beginning and 1 at the end) .
Script: Cursive.
Binding: Pre-1600. Full vellum binding of the 16th century over pasteboards with alum-tawed loop ties and turks-head knot catches. “JH & Z” watermark on end fly-leaf.

Completed in 1595, an inscription at the end: 'Finis Ano 1595' (f. 255v).
Sir Thomas Phillipps (b. 1792, d. 1872), collector of books and manuscripts, in his library: a label with his shelfmark, no. 23055 on the lower spine. A handwritten label with the number 1333 on the upper spine.
Alan George Fenwick, by descent from Sir Thomas Phillips, deposited as Loan 36/29 with the British Museum in 1949 by him and the Trustees of the Fenwick Settlement (deposit 10381). Purchased by the British Library from the Fenwick Trust in 2006.
