Letter from King Henry VII to Edward Courtenay, Earl of Devon, concerning Perkin Warbeck's rebellion in the West Country and the defence of Exeter, 16 September, no year, Woodstock. Signed 'H[enricus] R[ex]' at the head of letter.
In September 1497, Perkin Warbeck sailed from Cork to Cornwall, where he proclaimed himself as Richard IV and set off for Exeter. In this letter, Henry VII orders Edward Courtenay and his followers to defend the city and 'wt you alle the nobles of yr said co[m]pany wt their retynewes can, by various means, harry, surround and capture Perkin and the rebels', ensuring that 'Perkin escape you not in any waise for it is the chief thyng we desire to have hym broughte unto me alyve'. Henry VII informs Courtenay that reinforcements are being sent, and money with Richard Empson and William Hattercliff, and that a generous reward is to be offered for the capture of Warbeck.
Papered royal signet seal on the verso and addressed to 'oure right trusty and right welbeloved cousin Therle of Devonshire, and to oure trusty and right welbeloved the other noblemen assembled ... in his company'.
